Na minha viagem recente a Nova Iorque a maioria do que eu planejei em termos de foto desandou. Mas, como tantas vezes acontece, situações novas, imprevistas e inesperadas se apresentaram. Uma surpresa muito boa que o acaso colocou no meu caminho foi conversar com Dirk. Dirk é um cara bem interessante, cuja vida até o momento parece ter sido uma busca igualmente muito interessante. Do pouco que pudemos conversar ele me passou a impressão de ser um viajante tanto físico quanto espiritual, cuja jornada não apenas se estendeu de costa a costa, mas também lhe abriu muitos territórios espirituais novos.
Pouco depois que entrou em contato comigo, ele mencionou que trabalhava pra o representante de uma marca francesa de design em iluminação, e que o show room deles poderia ser um lugar bacana pra fotos. Eu tinha minhas dúvidas se iriam me permitir fotografar lá, mas quando ele disse que o chefe deu o ok, lá fui eu ver no que dava. Enquanto a gente conversava um pouco sobre a vida dele e as várias tatuagens, uma das peças lindas expostas chamou minha atenção. Eu imediatamente a associei com a tatuagem enorme nas costas dele, e pensei nele sentado ali, como na foto: embaixo da árvore da iluminação, olhando pra luz, no limite entre a iluminação e os aspectos mais sombrios do nosso mundo. In my recent trip to New York most the plans I had made for photographing fell through. However, as it often happens, new, unforeseen and unexpected situations presented themselves. A very good surprise chance put in my way was chatting to Dirk. Dirk is a most interesting pal, whose life seems to have been a most interesting quest so far. From the little we could chat about, he gave me the impression of both a physical and spiritual wanderer, whose journey hasn´t only extended from coast to coast, but one which has also opened many new spiritual territories for him.
A little after he got in touch with me, he mentioned that he worked for the representative of a French ligthing desing brand and that their showroom might be a nice location for photos. I had my doubts if I´d be allowed to photograph there, but when he said his boss was ok with it, there I went to give it a try. As we spoke a bit about his life and his many tattoos, one of the beautiful pieces on display caught my attention. I immediately associated it with his big back tattoo and thought of him sitting there, as in the photo: under the tree of enlightenment, facing the light, on the verge between the illumination and the shadowy aspects of our world.
